Orthopaedics

What is Orthopaedic surgery?

Orthopaedic Surgery encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system of the human body. This includes bones, joints and surrounding anatomy such as muscles, nerves, ligaments and tendons.

Orthopaedic surgeons often specialise in specific areas or groups of the musculoskeletal system such as hip, knee, foot and ankle, paediatrics and trauma.

There are many different treatment options aside from surgical treatment, including prescribed exercise, medications and rehabilitative programs. Often these non-surgical techniques are used in conjunction with surgical treatment to improve patient outcomes.

Common adult orthopaedic conditions include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunion and other foot disorders
  • Sports injuries
  • Fractures & trauma
  • Bursitis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Tumours
  • Infections
